How to build a medieval castle in Minecraft

A good Minecraft castle is mostly a few decisions made early: where the walls go, how tall the keep is and how the parts connect. The tips work whether you build by hand or with The Architect.

Start with the site

Castles work best on high ground. A hill gives the walls a reason to exist and makes the keep look taller. The Medieval Mountainside Castle is terraced up a slope with stone retaining walls: a gatehouse at the foot, curtain walls with four round towers, and a keep on the top terrace backed against the mountain. Stairs link every terrace. If you build on flat ground, raise the keep on a terrace instead.

Plan the footprint

Decide the size before the first block. The mountainside castle fits 48 by 48 blocks, and the Medieval Walled City is also 48 by 48 with square towers every 10 blocks. Evenly spaced towers make the wall read as designed rather than random.

Build the outside first

  1. Lay out the curtain wall and mark the tower positions.
  2. Raise the wall to a consistent height, then add the towers a few blocks above it.
  3. Build the gatehouse. It is the entrance, so it should be the best-looking part of the wall.
  4. Add the keep last, because it sets the skyline.

Mix the stone

Plain stone bricks look flat at scale. Mix in mossy and cracked stone bricks, and add a darker accent such as spruce for roofs and beams. The walled city's material list is mostly stone bricks and cobblestone, with mossy stone bricks and andesite mixed in. The mountainside castle uses light stone bricks with spruce roofs, with banners on the towers for colour.

Add the details that sell it

  • Battlements: alternate full blocks and gaps on top of the wall.
  • Banners and lanterns on the towers and along the walls.
  • Stairs and slabs for roof edges and window frames.
  • A road from the gate to the keep.

Plan the gathering

A castle takes a lot of stone. The mountainside castle's list has 29,641 Stone because of the terraces, so check the material list before you start in survival. Our survival guide has a workflow for large builds.
